
Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera says that the appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka is unconstitutional and illegal.
He also claimed that it is an ‘anti-democratic coup’.
“The appointment of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister is unconstitutional & illegal. This is an anti democratic coup,” the UNP Vice Chairman tweeted after the news broke out.
Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was appointed as the Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and was sworn in before President Maithripala Sirisena today (26) at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.
The unexpected news comes just minutes after the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) decided to withdraw from the unity government. The decision was taken at the UPFA Working Committee meeting today.
