Taking into consideration the letter submitted by the United National Party (UNP), requesting to defend the rights and ensure the security of Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya has directed a letter to the President.

The letter issued by the Speaker stated that, in the face of current political crisis that has arisen in the country, it is the absolute duty of the Speaker to defend the rights of every public representative.

Hence, the request made by the UNP to defend the rights and privileges of Ranil Wickremesinghe is democratic and just, the letter has mentioned.

Stating that several incidents related to threatening via media platforms have also been reported, the Speaker said that certain countries have already issued warnings to the tourists who are to arrive in Sri Lanka, which implies the severity of the crisis in the country.

The letter also mentions that the Speaker has requested the President not to allow an adverse situation to take place in the country by proroguing the parliament for 20 days until November 16.

The Speaker has further stated that according to the parliamentary traditions, prorogation of the parliament should be done with the knowledge of the Speaker.
