Sri Lankan held for attempting to smuggle gemstones

A Sri Lankan passenger has been apprehended by the Customs officers attached to the Departure Area of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle out several gemstones up to 297.79 carats.

The Customs officers have uncovered the gemstones concealed in the suspect’s rectum and his travelling bag, during a detection carried out before he was to leave for Kuala Lumpur at 12.40 a.m. this morning (07).

Reportedly, the haul is estimated to be worth over Rs 1.5 million.

The suspect is revealed to be a 43-year-old person residing in Beruwala area.

The Customs officers attached to the BIA are investigating the incident further.
