The Department of Meteorology says that the low pressure area is now located over the Indian coastal region of Cape Comorine (Kanyakumari) and the adjoining Sri Lankan sea area.

Under the influence of the low pressure system, the prevailing showery and cloudy condition over the island and surrounding sea areas is likely to continue, it said.

The general public, naval and fishing communities are requested to be attentive about advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.

Issuing a special weather advisory, the department warned that very heavy rainfall of above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Northern and Eastern provinces and heavy falls of about 100 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere.

Winds speed will be 30-40 kmph over sea areas around the island and rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times over the deep sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Galle via Puttalam.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers, it said.

The sea condition is expected to be rough over sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanturai and over the deep sea area extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo.

The Met. Department said that another low pressure area is likely to develop over Andaman Sea and adjoining sea area southeast in Bay of Bengal during next 48 hours.

It is very likely to move west-northwest wards and intensify further subsequently.

Fishermen are advised to be vigilant in this regards, the advisory said.
