Police officers killed in Batticaloa posthumously promoted

The two police constables, who were killed in Vavunativu, Batticaloa this morning (30) have been posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeants, under the orders of IGP Pujith Jayasundara. 

 

Bodies of the two police constables attached to Vavunativu Police Station were uncovered by two other police officers at around 6.00 a.m. this morning.

 

Reportedly, one constable has been shot to death while the other was attacked with the sharp weapon.

 

The deceased constables had reported for duty at the checkpoint, located 800 m off the Vavunativu Police Station, at around 6.00 p.m. last evening (29).

 

Officers of Vavunativu and several other police stations had launched a probe into the suspicious deaths of the two constables. Preliminary police investigations had uncovered that the constables were murdered at around 3.30-4.00 a.m. 

 

One of the two deceased policemen has been identified as a 35-year-old police constable named Niroshan Indika Prasanna, who had been residing in Galle. The other constable is a 28-year-old named Ganesh Dinesh, a resident of Kalmunai area.

 

Constable Dinesh has reportedly suffered a gunshot in the head, while Constable Indika has suffered cut wounds across his neck.

 

According to preliminary police investigations Constable Indika had put up a fight with the attacker before succumbing to injuries.

 

The murderers have taken away the two revolvers in possession of the deceased constables.

 

The Magistrate’s inquest was conducted by the Batticaloa Magistrate this morning.

 

A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was deployed to Batticaloa this afternoon over the death of the two police officers in Batticaloa, according to the Police Media Spokesperson.

 

Subsequently, a special team including the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Senior DIG of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Media Spokesperson had arrived in Batticaloa to probe into the killing of the two policemen.
