National Drug Eradication School Week commences today

Special attention has been drawn regarding the school children, in the process of President Maithripala Sirisena’s effort to prevent and control the drug menace in Sri Lanka and accordingly National Drug Prevention Week has been declared, the President’s Media Division said.

 

The National Drug Prevention Week is to be implemented from 21st to 28th of January, to get the active participation of school children, and the inauguration ceremony of the Week will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Vidyananda Maha Vidyalaya, Mulliyawalai, Mullaitivu today (21).

 

In parallel to this, 150,000 school children in the North will be given the pledge on the prevention of drug abuse at the morning assembly of the schools.

 

During the Drug Prevention Week, on January 21 awareness programmes in classrooms will be held to apprise the students regarding drug prevention and parents will be invited to the school on January 22 to conduct drug prevention programmes with the students at classrooms and on January 23 legal awareness programmes on drug abuse will be conducted.

 

On January 24 awareness campaigns on drug menace will be held to apprise the political authority and on January 25 programmes will be held to spread the message of drug prevention within schools as well as the outside using various media and to apprise the journalists.

 

On January 26 programmes, including the activities of drug prevention by voluntary organizations will be held and on January 27 drug prevention programmes will be held centering religious places and Dhamma Schools.

 

During this event, the President will also officially launch the toll-free telephone number 1984 to inform regarding the acts of drug smuggling and related crimes.

 

The presentation of financial assistance to 11 schools affected by the floods occurred in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts, to utilize for the reconstruction of those schools and the presentation of financial assistance to 13 schools in the Mullaitivu district to get drinking water facility will also be held under the President’s patronage, the release by PMD further said.
