Sri Lanka Test Cricket Captain Dimuth Karunaratne, who was arrested by the police over a case of drunk driving that resulted in an accident, has been granted bail after being produced before the Colombo Traffic Court Magistrate today (01).

The Magistrate has also ordered to suspend the driving license of the Test Cricket Captain.

The Magistrate then ordered to direct the suspect to the National Transport Medical Institute and called for a report on him.

When the case was taken up today, the Borella Traffic Police Division informed the court that the breathalyzer test had revealed he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The plaintiff has informed the police that he does not intend to proceed with the case any longer, the police further told the court.

The police said, however, they intend to probe the incident further and would inform the court on the progress of the investigations.

Appearing on behalf of the plaintiff, Attorney Sunil Watagala said his client is willing to reach a settlement.

President’s Counsel Rienzie Arseculeratne, speaking for Dimuth Karunaratne, said his client had admitted the victim soon after the accident.

He further told the court that Karunaratne is remorseful over the incident and he is willing to purchase a new three-wheeler for the victim if the three-wheeler that was involved in the accident has suffered any losses.

Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered to take up the case again on May 2nd and ordered the Borella Police to report the progress of the investigations to the court on that day.

At around 5.15 a.m. last morning (31), the car Karunaratne was driving had collided with a three-wheeler in Kynsey Road, Borella.

The driver of the three-wheeler had suffered injuries from the accident and was subsequently admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo.

He was later released on police bail yesterday.
