At least 42 individuals including estate workers of the Laxapana Estate in Nallathanniya and several children have been admitted to the Maskeliya Hospital due to suspected food poisoning.
Around 7 children, 35 men and women who had consumed parcels of food given at an annual festival held at the Hindu Kovil in the estate yesterday (19) have been hospitalised after they showed symptoms of food poisoning.
According to reports the food had been prepared at the Kovil itself, parceled and distributed to estate workers by the Kovil’s trustees.
The estate workers and their children had been admitted to the hospital early this morning (20), however none of them are in critical condition, according to hospital sources.
The Maskeliya Medical Officer’s Office has launched an inquiry into the food poisoning incident.
