Former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Hector Dharmasiri has been sentenced to 3-year imprisonment for deploying civil security personnel for personal use, says Ada Derana reporter.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate has delivered the order today (02).

The former DIG was also imposed a fine of Rs 300,000 by the court.

He was charged for deploying civil security personnel for personal use at his house in Minuwangoda, while he was serving as the Senior Superintendent of Police in Matale Division in 2007.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate, following a lengthy trial on the cases against former DIG Hector Dharmasiri filed by the Bribery Commission, convicted the defendant for 6 charges laid against him.

The court imposed one-year imprisonment for each charge against the former DIG and sentenced him to six-year imprisonment, to be completed within three years.

The Chief Magistrate has said the relevant punishment was imposed to set an example to other public officers who engage in such offences.

Cases had been filed against the defendant under 15 charges, out of which he was convicted for six charges and acquitted of the rest.

The defence attorney said they would submit an appeal against the court order delivered by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
