The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development says that the disposing of waste at the Kerawalapitiya garbage terminal has been stopped due to the exceeding of its capacity.

The waste terminal in Kerawalapitiya, which is operated by the Land Reclamation & Development Corporation under the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, has stopped accepting any waste material with effect from today (05).

The terminal was initiated as a temporary solution to the sudden garbage crisis in Colombo city under a time period of one year, however it had been operated for over two years.

The ministry said that disposing garbage at the terminal has been halted as the maximum capacity has been reached.

Previously a decision had been taken to halt the dumping of mixed waste at the yard due to the lack of space while only segregated waste was allowed to be brought to the site from Colombo.
