No tsunami threat from earthquake in Indian Ocean south east of SL

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 been recorded at 2.34 am today (12) in the Indian Ocean off the South East coast of Sri Lanka, says the Department of Meteorology.

The Department, however, noted that there is no tsunami threat to the island owing to the earthquake which was of 10km depth.

Therefore, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka have been declared safe.

The Meteorology Department mentioned that this alert was issued in consultation with relevant national and international agencies.
