The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) advises the public to refrain from misuse of all forms telecommunication services to circulate or share false or fabricated information on Covid-19 to create unnecessary panic among the general public.
This is a punishable offence in terms of the law, the TRCSL said, issuing a notice today (13).
The Government Information Department yesterday said it has been observed that various parties publish unconfirmed information creating unrest/calamity among public across websites, social media as well as Whatsapp, Viber groups hiding behind the prevailing circumstances.
Vehemently criticizing the irresponsible behavior of these parties at the verge of a national calamity, the Government urges the requirement refraining from such actions while informs that strong actions would be taken against those engaged in such actions.
Furthermore, the Government requests from the Public to accept only the official confirmed news and act accordingly.
While informing not to be misled by the circulation of rumours of presence of Coronavirus infected patients in certain location, the Government emphasizes that steps would be taken to officially inform via state institutions of any confirmation of such patients from any location immediately.
