Luxury utilities enjoyed by Negombo Prison inmates

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday commenced investigations into the alleged use of luxury utilities by two suspects who were remanded at Negombo Prison on drug charges.

It was recently revealed that a suspect named ‘Austin’ remanded over the possession of 30 kg of narcotic drugs had used a refrigerator at the prison while an Indian who also remanded over the 100 kg of narcotic drugs had used a microwave oven.

During a raid by the Prison Intelligence Unit on June 09, 61 mobile phones, 51 SIM cards, and several phone accessories were recovered at the Negombo Prison.

In another operation carried out at the Negombo Prison details into the luxurious lives led by certain inmates have been revealed.

Reportedly, Prison Intelligence has recovered luxury utilities, including a modern oven, in a cell of a prisoner who had been sentenced to death over drug trafficking.

A team of CID officers headed by ASP Merrill Ranjan Lamahewa visited the Negombo Prison yesterday (12) to investigate the matter. The investigations had been carried out from noon to 7 pm yesterday.

The prison officials had said that the refrigerator found during the search operation had been donated to the prison by a businessman for community purposes.

Claiming the aforementioned statement by the prison officials false, the CID stated that they will submit a report on the investigation in the coming week.
