In the other change to the Australian lineup that beat Afghanistan by a record margin in Perth on Wednesday, Xavier Doherty was picked for the first time in the tournament in conditions expected to favour spin.
Sri Lanka, which has won three games since losing to New Zealand in the tournament opener, made three changes.
The winner at the Sydney Cricket Ground is likely to finish second in the group, and possibly avoid a semifinal detour to New Zealand.
