Met. Dept. warns of heavy showers and rough seas

June 23, 2020   08:39 am

The Department of Meteorology today (23) issued an advisory for the Western, Southern, Eastern and South-eastern deep and shallow sea areas of the island.

Due to the active cloudiness in the Eastern and South-eastern deep sea areas of the island the possibility for heavy showers/thundershowers and sudden roughness, associated with a sudden increase of wind speed (up to 70-80 kmph) in the above given deep-sea areas is high.

The shallow sea area extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Colombo, Galle, Matara and Hambantota can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph at times.

The other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times.

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard in the above sea areas.

Land areas:

Several spells of showers will occur in Western, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces, says the Meteorology Department.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Northern, Eastern and North-central provinces.

Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Uva province after 2.00 p.m.

Wind speed can increase up to (40-50) kmph at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills and in Southern province.

The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity and localized strong winds during thundershowers.
