Over 100mm rainfall expected in six districts

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, says the Department of Meteorology.

Heavy rainfalls exceeding 100 mm are likely at some places in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Matara districts.

A few showers may occur in Northern province and Anuradhapura district.

Strong gusty winds about (50-60) kmph can be expected across the island, particularly in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts and in the western slopes of the central hills.


Sea areas:

The Meteorology Department meanwhile said deep depression formed over west-central Bay of Bengal sea area was located at 16.5 N, 83.4E at midnight yesterday (12). It is likely to move West-north-westwards and cross North Andra Pradesh (India) coast between 08.30 - 11.30 a.m. today (13).  

Strong or very strong gusty winds, heavy rainfalls and rough or very rough seas can be expected over north of Andaman sea and East-central Bay of Bengal Sea area (12N-18N, 80E-92E) during subsequent days from today.

Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into aforementioned deep sea areas until 14th October 2020.

Further, Fishermen are informed that it will be dangerous to venture into the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota until 14th October 2020 and naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle and Matara. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Kankesanturai to Puttalam via Mannar,

Winds will be South-westerly in the sea areas around the island and the wind speed will be (35-45) kmph.

Wind speed can increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and increase up to (55-60) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Mullaitivu via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankesanturai. Wind speed can increase up to (50-55) kmph in the other sea areas as well.

The sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota can be rough or very rough at times. The sea areas extending from Negombo to Mullaitivu via Puttalam, Mannar and Kankesanturai, can be fairly rough or rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough at times.
