Sri Lanka Police will regulate the means of transport used by schoolchildren as the third academic term for the year 2020 commences tomorrow (November 23), Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
DIG Rohana mentioned this joining the TV Derana breakfast show ‘Derana Aruna’ this morning (22).
In addition, the Police are working with the health sector to take necessary action with regard to school hours and classroom conditions, he said.
He added: “In particular, our task would be to pay special attention to the means of transport used by school children, whether they are school buses, school vans or private vehicles or three-wheelers.
This is not to fine, to file court cases, or to arrest. But there are a number of health guidelines on proper procedures for transporting children to school. Also, the Ministry of Education has instructed us to follow these instructions.
In the past, we have not acted against two or three school children taking the same three-wheeler despite it being against the Motor Vehicles Act. However, we will pay more attention to this from tomorrow.
Some kind of social distancing must be maintained even inside vehicles. We intend to warn and advise with this regard.”
