Construction of new expressway and 5 flyovers begin

The construction of the elevated expressway from the Kelani Bridge to Athurugiriya was launched by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa a short while ago.
The upcoming 16.4 km expressway is reported to have four lanes connecting the first and the second expressways of Sri Lanka.
There will be interchanges at Dematagoda, Rajagiriya, Koswatta, and Hokandara aiming to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Colombo.
At the event, the Prime Minister also launched the construction of five flyover bridges as well, Minister of Highways Johnston Fernando said.
Prime Minister announced that six flyovers will be built in Getambe, Kohuwala, Judge Akbar Mawatha in Slave Island, Uttarananda Mawatha, Baladaksha Mawatha, and Chittampalam A. Gardner Mawatha.
Speaking at the event, Premier Rajapaksa also said, “I see it as a victory if we can reduce the amount of time people spend on the road due to traffic jams and save that time for productive work.”
