DG of Sports gives undertaking on Football Federation elections

The Director-General of Sports, Amal Edirisooriya today (Oct. 20) gave an undertaking before the Court of Appeal regarding the elections for the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL).

 

He pledged that the Sri Lanka Football Federation elections would be held within 69 days from today.

 

The pledge was given when the writ applications filed by the former President and the General Secretary of the Football Federation demanding the dismissal of a decision taken by the Minister of Sports to cancel a gazette notification issued for extending the official tenure of FFSL was called before the Appeals Court today (Oct 20).

 

When the petitions were taken up for consideration, Sports Director-General Amal Edirisooriya and Additional Secretary to Sports Ministry Prasanna Sandith appeared before Appeals Court Judges Sobhitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola.

 

Representing the Football Federation, Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardhana told the judge bench that nominations would be called for the election of federation’s office bearers following the appointment of the selection committee within 14 days from today.

 

The Sports Director-General has pledged to hold the Football Federation’s election within 69 days from today, he added.

 

The additional solicitor general further noted that those who serve in the federation’s selection committee would not be allowed to contest in the election. The petitioners also acceded to this.

 

Appearing on behalf of the petitioners, Attorney-at-Law Eraj de Silva pointed out the need to expedite the Football Federation’s election.
