New commercial high court to be established at Colombo Port City

Discussions are underway to establish a new commercial high court which will have exclusive jurisdiction on the matter pertaining to the at Colombo Port City, President Ranil Wickremesinghe says.

He made this remark addressing an event organized by the Colombo High Court Lawyers’ Association in view of its 25th anniversary. The event was held on Dec. 19.

Speaking further, he stated that high courts will have new roles to play in the country’s judiciary system with the introduction of new laws such on environment, climate change and women empowerment.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted the approval to issue three types of visas to investors and service providers at the Colombo Port City.

Accordingly, plans are afoot to introduce the following categories of visas:

• Investment visa for investors under the residential visa category
• Employment visa for employees
• CPC Residential Property Lease Vendor visa category for foreigners who reside within the Colombo Port City on lease

The proposal was tabled by Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles at the Cabinet meeting held on Monday (Dec 19) to take measures required for introducing the aforesaid categories of visa.
