47 arrested with drugs in police raid near schools

The police have arrested a total of 47 people who were in possession of various types of narcotics, in a raid carried out near 149 schools in the Western Province on Thursday (Dec 22).

Among the arrestees is a 17-year-old student who was taken into custody near a leading school in Mirihana for the possession of cannabis.

In the raid, conducted under the directives of Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, the police managed to seize 9g 630mg of heroin, 2g 38mg of crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as ‘ICE’), 207g 590mg of cannabis and 1kg 260mg of ‘Mawa’.

This special operation was in progress between 6.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the police arrested 75 others in a special narcotics operation near schools in the Western Province.

Sri Lanka Police reiterated that such raids will be continued in the future in a bid to crack down on drug abuse at schools in the country.
