Former Minister A.H.M. Fowzie was sworn in as a Member of the Parliament when the parliamentary session commenced this morning (Feb. 09).

He was sworn in as a member of the 9th Parliament today (09) before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

After being sworn in before the Speaker, he signed the Member Roll kept in the presence of the Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Dhammika Dasanayake.

Accordingly, Fowzie has been appointed to fill the vacant MP seat following the resignation of Mujibur Rahman from his position as a Member of Parliament.

Rahman announced his decision to step down as an MP in order to contest for the post of Mayor of Colombo in the upcoming Local Government election.

Born on 13.10.1937, Fowzie entered in to active politics in 1959. He was elected as the Deputy Mayor of Colombo in 1968 and was elected as the 16th Mayor of Colombo in 1973.

Fowzie, who was elected to the Western Provincial Council in 1993, contested the 1994 general election and was elected to Parliament. He has also held many different ministerial posts.

He had contested in the last Parliamentary Election from the Colombo District, and had obtained a total of 48,701 votes to secure the 07th place in the voting list.

However, he had failed to enter the Parliament as the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) only managed to secure 06 parliamentary seats in the district.
