One lane of the Kandy-Mahiyangana road which was closed near the 14th bend of the 18 Hairpin Bends (18 Wanguwa) due to an earth slip yesterday (March 04), has now been opened for traffic, the Police Media Division said.

Police announced last night that the Kandy - Mahiyanganaya road will remain closed near the 14th of the 18 Hairpin Bends owing to an earth slip.

An earth embankment had collapsed on the road section between the 13th and 14th bends due to inclement weather conditions, and the section of the road was completely blocked due to the earth slip, according to police.

Accordingly, the police had informed the motorists to use alternative routes.

The Road Development Authority (RDA) had commenced restoration activities on the road this morning (March 05), following the instruction by the Minister of Transport and Highways, Bandula Gunawardene directing officials to inspect the concerned area and remove the mounds of earth and rocks which fallen onto the road, and take necessary steps to reopen the road for traffic as soon as possible.

Accordingly, one lane of the road has currently reopened for traffic, while the renovation activities of the road are still underway in order to reopen the remaining lane for traffic.
