The government says many public sector institutions are operative today to provide services to the people, despite the 24-hour token strike launched by the Professionals’ Trade Union Alliance (PTUA).

The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), Lalith de Alwis, has confirmed that all 107 depots are operating as per the regular timetable.

Accordingly, Alwis confirmed that all 107 depots are operating as scheduled as of 11:00 a.m. today (15 March), despite the multisectoral trade union strike taking place.

He further revealed that apart from the trade union affiliated with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), seven of the eight unions are cooperative.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of People’s Bank, Clive Fonseka, has confirmed that nearly 300 out of the 340 branches are fully functional.

Accordingly, Fonseka, who is also currently serving as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of People’s Bank, stated that 330 branches out of the 352 across the island are fully functional, with attendance reported at over 75% as at 10:30 this morning.

Earlier this morning, the General Manager of the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) confirmed that over 200 branches islandwide are operating as usual, unaffected by the token strike.

According, Russel Fonseka stated that 265 branches, including the Head Office and all other divisions are operating as usual to serve the public with banking services.

The following has been confirmed by the President’s Media Division (PMD).

Furthermore, a total of 20 trains were operated by 08:00 a.m. today for the convenience of commuters amidst the ongoing trade union action.

The General Manager of the Sri Lanka Railways Department W. A. D. S Gunasinghe stated that this was possible owing to the committed service of railways employees.

The following has been confirmed by the President’s Media Division (PMD).
