Two CMC workers die after falling in sewage pit

Two employees of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) have reportedly died after being admitted to Colombo National Hospital due to collapsing while trying to connect a newly constructed sewerage line at Kotahena.  

The Police Media Division said that two out of three workers who were engaged in maintenance work of the sewage line system near the Hettiyawatte Junction in Kotahena police area this afternoon (27), had fallen into the sewage pit and were rushed to hospital in critical condition. 

They had both passed away while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. The deceased have been identified as employees of the Colombo Municipal Council, aged 28 and 38, who are residents of Colombo 10 and Colombo 14.

According to police, one of the workers had initially fallen into the sewage pit and that another worker who had attempted to rescue him had also collapsed and fallen into the pit. 

Kotahena Police is conducting further investigations.
