Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam has decided to file an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging a verdict delivered by the Colombo Trial-at-Bar earlier this month.
On April 06, the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar acquitted five individuals accused of smuggling and being in possession a large volume of heroin, weighing 196 kilograms intercepted off the northern coast of Sri Lanka.
The Attorney General had filed a case before the Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar against the five suspects.
After concluding the hearing of the case, the Trial-at-Bar acquitted and released the accused as the prosecution failed to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
Accordingly, the Attorney General decided to challenge the verdict.
