Environment Police on the go: Clear Kolonnawa-Meetotamulla area

The newly set up Environment Police Unit (EPU) is to embark on a programme to rid the city of its garbage and other pollutants, said Superintendent of Police (SP), Prishantha Jayakody.


Nearly 200 persons were taken into custody for dumping garbage on the highways and later released on bail, the spokesman said.


The 140 new Police unit appointed by the Defence Secretary is under Colombo Crimes Division Director and Colombo DIG Anura Senanayake.


Twelve special teams will be deployed in and around Colombo, according to DIG Senanayake.


This Unit will be tasked with the monitoring of the city’s garbage disposal, unauthorized constructions, maintenance of drainage systems, destruction of wild life where present, illicit gemming and other activities that harm the environment.


As a first step, the garbage dumps in the Kolonnawa-Meetotamulla area and it is to be converted into a green belt.
