Four dead in tragic van-lorry crash in Thambuttegama

Four people died while four others were left injured in a tragic crash involving a van and a lorry early this morning (Aug 04) in Eriyagama of Thambuttegama.

According to the police, a lorry that was travelling from Kurunegala to Anuradhapura had been rear-ended by a van.

A total of 08 people who were inside the van were rushed to the Thambuttegama Base Hospital where four of them including 02 women succumbed to critical injuries.

The deceased, aged 36, 43 and 46, are reportedly members of the same family and residents of Kahatagasdigiliya area.

Among the wounded who are receiving treatment at the hospital is a 55-year-old man, two boys aged 06 and 11, and an 8-year-old girl.

The police said the carelessness of the van driver had caused the accident. It is reported that he had lost control of the vehicle while speeding.

Meanwhile, the driver of the lorry is currently in police custody. Thambuttegama Police is conducting further investigations into the accident.

The bodies of the deceased are placed at the Thambuttegama Base Hospital.
