A person who was travelling on a crowded train plying from Colombo to Rambukkana has reportedly been injured after falling from the compartment at Bulugahagoda this evening (Sept. 12)
The injured commuter has been rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.
This incident comes hours after a youth tragically fell to death at Horape railway station while travelling on the roof of the Kandy-Colombo Fort train crammed with passengers this morning.
The 18-year-old had fallen off the train after knocking against the roof of the railway station and died on the spot.
More than 100 short-distance trains scheduled to operate today were canceled due to the strike action launched by the Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union since midnight yesterday (Sept. 11) over several key demands, including amendments to the recruitment process and promotions, which they say have been delayed for nearly five years despite their constant requests.
As a result of the trade union action, passengers were seen train surfing due to overcrowding, and many others were left stranded at railway stations.
