The driver responsible for the death of a Police Constable after running him over with an SUV on Thursday evening (05 Oct.), has been remanded until 10 October.

The 27-year-old SUV driver was remanded on orders of the Colombo Magistrate Court No.07 (Traffic Court) this afternoon (06 Oct.).

Manoj Priyankara, a 25-year-old Police Constable, succumbed to his injuries this morning, while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital after an errant driver ran him over last evening.

The SUV driver was arrested soon after the accident, police said, adding that he had failed to control the speed of the vehicle and run over the police officer. The vehicle had subsequently come to a stop after crashing into the fountain located at the center of the Independence Square Roundabout.

The driver was found to be a technical engineer of a private company and a resident of Narahenpita area. He is reportedly the son of a volunteer obstetrician and gynaecologist who had served at the police hospital years ago, and was later conferred the rank of Deputy Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
