The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ level special weather advisory for heavy rain and lightning in most parts of the island, to be in effect from October 17 to October 20, 2023.

Since the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone; where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge, is affecting the island’s weather, the current rainy conditions on the island are expected to be enhanced during the coming days, the department said.

Accordingly, showers or thundershowers may occur at times in most parts of the island from 17 to 20 October, including the southwestern parts, it said.

High-intensity rains, occurring of greater rainfall during shorter periods of time, of more than 100mm are also likely in some places, according to the Met. Department.

Thus, the people living in hilly areas which are particularly landslide prone areas and low-lying areas in river basins are requested to be vigilant in this regard, during heavy rains. Motorists and people using roads in the hilly areas are requested to be vigilant.

Furthermore, the general public are advised to seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies, avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances, avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc. and to beware of fallen trees and power lines during a lightning situation.

The meteorology department further urges people to be aware of the latest forecasts and warnings issued by the department regarding this situation.
