Newly-appointed Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has revealed that the national security tops his priority list.
Speaking to the media after engaging in religious observances at the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Acting IGP Tennakoon said he would then focus on cracking down on the drug syndicates in the country, adding that it has now become a menace.
Thirdly, Acting Police Chief intends to get tough with organized criminals gangs that appear to have become more brazen.
Tennakoon, who was serving as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of Western Province, was elevated to the post of Acting Police Chief earlier today (Nov.29), pursuant to the powers vested with President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
As such, he will be in office as the Acting IGP for a period of three months.
The appointment comes after former Police Chief C. D. Wickramaratne announced that he would retire from the position, with effect from Nov.25 after four service extensions.
