Pope Francis appoints new Bishop of Chilaw

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Arachchige Don Wimal Siri Appuhamy Jayasuriya as the new Bishop of Chilaw.

This was announced in a media release published by the Press Office of the Holy See.

Bishop Jayasuriya was born on January 23, 1969, in Negombo in the Archdiocese of Colombo.

After attending the minor seminary in Chilaw, he studied philosophy and theology at the Our Lady of Lanka National Major Seminary in Kandy. He was ordained a priest in August 1997, for the diocese of Chilaw.

He holds a baccalaureate in philosophy and theology from Our Lady of Lanka National Major Seminary, Kandy.

Following his ordination and several years of pastoral ministry, he pursued further studies at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome from 2000 to 2005, where he earned a licentiate a doctorate in canon law in 2005.

Prior to his new appointment, Bishop Jayasuriya served as the parish priest of Saint Mary Mother of God in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend while on a mission in the United States.
