Flood warning issued for low-lying areas of Malwathu Oya

The Irrigation Department has issued an ‘Amber’ flood warning for the low-lying areas of Malwathu Oya as the water levels are on the rise.

As per the warning, there is a possibility of a minor flood situation occurring in low-lying areas of Malwathu Oya valley situated Vengalacheddikulam, Madu, Mussalai and Nanaddan Divisional Secretariat Divisions as a considerable rainfall has occurred in upstream areas of Malwathu Oya as of 02.00 p.m. today (17). 

As a result, there is a high possibility of inundation off roads running through flood plains of Malwathu Oya, the Irrigation Department said.

Thus, the residents in those area and motorists traveling through those areas are requested to pay high attention in this regard while Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take adequate actions.
