The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) states that approximately Rs. 260 million was collected in fines in the raids conducted during the months that have elapsed this year.
Around 22,000 raids have been carried out at local markets by the authority so far this year, while 21,000 of those cases were taken to the courts, as per the CAA’s data.
Accordingly, the courts have levied a total of Rs. 267,630,448 in fines, the CAA said.
The relevant cases have been filed over several charges including selling of goods at higher rates, hoarding the stocks, sale of expired items and failure to display the prices.
Meanwhile, 1,185 raids have been carried out under the special programme initiated by the CAA in view of the festive season.
The CAA emphasized that the relevant raids would be continued during the upcoming days.
