Four earthquakes strike Indian Ocean

Four strong earthquakes have struck the Carlsberg Ridge of Indian Ocean on Friday morning (Dec.29), off the archipelagic state, the Maldives. 

Senior Seismologist of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB), Nilmini Thaldena told Ada Derana that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the first quake registered a magnitude of 4.8 and a depth of 10km, with three subsequent quakes striking at magnitudes 5.2, 5.8 and 5.0, respectively.

The second and fourth quakes (magnitudes 5.2 and 5.0) were recorded at a depth of 10km and the third quake (magnitude 5.8) struck at a depth of 7.7km.
