All Members of Parliament representing the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa have attended the parliament this morning (Jan. 09) wearing black outfits.

The action, reportedly, was in protest of the government’s move to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 18%.

The first parliamentary sitting of 2024 commenced at 9:30 a.m. this morning, presided over by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Accordingly, the Parliament is scheduled to meet from January 09 - 12, as per a decision made by the Committee on Parliamentary Business on 12 December 2023.
