A program has been launched to heighten the security of pharmacies located in the main towns of the Hatton Police Division as part of the ongoing ‘Yukthiya’ special anti-drug operation, Superintendent of Police (SP) in-charge of Hatton Nipuna Dehigama said.
Police stated that some drug addicts have gotten used to buying medicinal drugs from pharmacies to intoxicate themselves and that they try to make forceful purchases from pharmacies without a medical prescription.
Accordingly, instructions have been given to install a surveillance camera system at every pharmacy and measures were taken to keep pharmacies under the observation of police officers on night patrols as the establishments remain closed at night, SP Dehigama said.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the pharmacies were instructed not to issue such types of medicines to any individual with no recommendation from a qualified doctor.
