A decision has been taken to temporarily close all faculties, except for the Faculty of Applied Sciences, of the South-Eastern University of Sri Lanka in Oluvil as a result of the prevailing extreme weather conditions.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) stated that the decision was arrived at as the university premises are at risk of flooding.
Accordingly, the academic activities of the relevant faculties have been temporarily halted until further notice.
However, the activities of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which is located in Sammanthurai away from the main campus, will continue as usual, the UGC said.
The Department of Irrigation on Wednesday (Jan. 10) issued an ‘Amber’ flood warning for the downstream areas of the Gal Oya, after the capacity of the Senanayaka Samudraya reached its peak as at 04:00 p.m. yesterday.
Therefore, people living in the low-lying areas of Polwaththa, Pahalalanda, Irakkamam, Akkaraipattu, Addalachchenai, Alayadiwembu, Sammanthurai, Karthiv, Ninthavur, Sainthamaruthu, Kalmunai and South Eastern University area at Oluvil were urged to be vigilant regarding the matter.
