Another inmate of Kalutara Prison succumbs to illness

Another inmate of Kalutara Prison has died while receiving treatment for an illness at the hospital, Kalutara-North Police said. 

The deceased person is a 60-year-old resident of the Modarawila area of Panadura, the police said, adding that he was arrested on January 09 while in the possession of heroin and was ordered to be remanded in custody after being produced before Panadura Magistrate’s Court.

He had been admitted to Nagoda Teaching Hospital on January 14 due to an illness and passed away this morning (Jan.18) while receiving treatment at the hospital.

The prisons sources also mentioned that three inmates were reported dead within 4 days at the Kalutara Prison two weeks ago.

Kalutara-North Police are conducting further investigations regarding the incident.
