Commander of Sri Lanka Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage received commendation for his ground-breaking static parachute jump in a ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat on Friday (Feb.02).

The event, officiated by Sagala Ratnayake, Senior Adviser to the President on National Security and Chief of the Presidential Staff, along with Saman Ekanayake, Secretary to the President, celebrated Lt. Gen. Liyanage as a dedicated and highly trained military leader.

The placement of the parachute insignia (Airborne) on the Army Commander’s uniform serves as a symbolic representation of this extraordinary accomplishment, signifying Lt. Gen. Liyanage’s unparalleled dedication to pushing boundaries and leading by example, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

Lt. Gen. Liyanage achieved the status of military paratrooper on 22 January by taking to the skies aboard an MI-17 helicopter at the Uhana Air Force Base runway along with other participants including 18 military personnel from the Maldives National Defence Force and 14 members from the Sri Lanka Army.

The army commander’s journey to become a Military Paratrooper took place at the Commando Regiment Training School (CRTS) in Kuda Oya.
