The Colombo High Court has sentenced seven Pakistani and Iranian nationals to life in prison after they were convicted of possession and trafficking heroin.

This verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendige when the relevant case was taken up before the court this morning (14).

During an operation carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy in the 2022, the convicted Pakistani and Iranian nationals were apprehended while transporting 123 kg of heroin within Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.

Later, the Attorney General filed indictments against the suspects before the Colombo High Court.

The accused pleaded guilty to the charges when the case was taken up before the court today, and were subsequently sentenced to life in prison, Ada Derana reporter said.

Additionally, the court ordered the convicted foreign nationals to be extradited to their respective countries in order to serve their sentences, in consideration of a request made by them.
