A 20-year-old youth has been killed in a head-on collision between a three-wheeler and a tipper truck in the Punanai area along the Polonnaruwa–Batticaloa Road.
The accident had occurred last night (01) when the three-wheeler, travelling towards Batticaloa, collided with a tipper truck which travelled from the opposite direction.
The three-wheeler driver, a woman travelling in the rear seat, and two other passengers had sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Welikanda and Valaichchenai hospitals.
One of the injured, a 20-year-old resident of Valaichchenai, had later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Welikanda Hospital, police said.
The tipper truck also overturned following the collision, and its driver has been admitted to Welikanda Hospital with injuries.
Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
