Three Chinese nationals who attempted to smuggle a consignment of foreign-manufactured cigarettes into the country have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning (04).

The seized consignment of Chinese-made cigarettes is estimated to be worth over Rs. 8.3 million, according to officials.

The three Chinese nationals, aged 35, 38, and 50, were arrested by Sri Lanka Customs officials, Ada Derana reporter said.

Upon inspection, officials had discovered a total of 279 cartons containing 55,800 sticks of cigarettes concealed inside six pieces of luggage.

The suspects were apprehended while attempting to exit through the ‘Green Channel’, which is designated for passengers with no goods to declare, by Sri Lanka Customs officials and officers attached to the Customs Narcotics Control Division at BIA.
