Cab owner and another suspect arrested over fatal Meegoda accident remanded

The owner of the cab involved in the recent fatal crash at Meegoda Junction, which claimed the lives of six persons and left several others injured, along with another suspect, has been remanded until June 16.

Police stated that the two suspects surrendered to the Meegoda Police Station through an attorney on this morning  and were subsequently arrested.

The incident had occurred along the Avissawella–Colombo High Level Road within the Meegoda Police Division when a cab reportedly drove into a group of people waiting in line at a Dansala.

Six persons were killed and seven others sustained serious injuries in the crash.

Police said the cab driver was arrested and produced before the Homagama Magistrate’s Court on June 1, 2026. Accordingly, the court ordered that he be remanded until June 16, 2026.

Investigations have since revealed that three other individuals were travelling in the cab at the time of the incident. According to police, the suspects fled the area after the driver was taken into custody.

On Friday, Police sought public assistance to locate the three suspects who allegedly fled following the fatal road accident and released their photographs and information.
