Woman killed, 12 injured in fatal crash in Anamaduwa

A woman was killed and 12 others were left injured after a small lorry veered off the road and crashed into a tree in the Mudalakkuliya area in Anamaduwa, at around 1.00 p.m. today (06).

The accident had occurred while a group of individuals from Polonnaruwa were returning home after worshipping at the Munneswaram Temple in Chilaw in a small lorry, which had veered off the road and hit a tree.

It is reported that 13 people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

All of them were injured in the accident and rushed to the Anamaduwa Hospital, where the woman in question succumbed to injuries.

The deceased has been identified as a 52-year-old resident of the Aralaganwila area in Polonnaruwa.

It is also reported that two of the injured, who are in a serious condition, have been transferred to the Puttalam Base Hospital for further treatment.

Police suspect that the accident occurred due to the driver of the lorry falling asleep at the wheel, and the Anamaduwa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
