Two women killed in hit-and-run accident; drunk driver arrested

Two women have reportedly died after being hit by a car on the Ambulgama–Panagoda road in the Hanwella Police Division.

 

Police said the accident had occurred yesterday (06) in the afternoon.

 

A car traveling towards Ambulgama had struck two women who were walking along the road in the same direction, resulting in the accident.

 

Following the collision, the vehicle involved had not stopped and had fled the scene. 

 

The injured women were admitted to the Nawagamuwa Hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries, police said. 

 

The deceased have been identified as two women aged 42 and 44, residents of Ranala and Girandurukotte areas, according to police. 

 

Based on CCTV footage and information obtained after the incident, police arrested the suspected driver and also took the vehicle into custody.

 

Police further stated that investigations revealed the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

 

Hanwella Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
