Nearly 37,000 dengue cases reported thus far in 2026

Sri Lanka has recorded nearly 37,000 dengue cases so far this year, marking an increase of approximately 10,000 cases compared to the corresponding period in 2025, health authorities said.

The Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara said that close to 50 percent of the reported cases have originated from the Western Province.

According to official data, the Colombo District accounts for 22 percent of the total cases, followed by Gampaha District with 17 percent and Kalutara District with 6 percent.

Dr. Kannangara noted that dengue mosquito breeding sites have been frequently identified in schools, government institutions and places of worship, highlighting the need for enhanced prevention measures.

In response to the growing number of infections, the National Dengue Control Unit has launched a special mosquito control programme from today to June 10. The initiative will cover 14 districts and 72 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions across the country.

The programme includes inspections of residences, government and private institutions, schools, places of worship, factories, construction sites, vacant lands and other high-risk locations. Authorities will also issue red notices and initiate legal action against individuals or institutions found maintaining mosquito breeding grounds.

The national programme was officially launched at the Colombo Municipal Council premises.
