Plans are underway to develop the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage into an elephant research centre as well as a breeding facility, according to the Minister of Environment, Dammika Patabendi.
The Environment Minister made these remarks at a media briefing held in Colombo today (08).
He said the proposed development is expected to strengthen elephant research, conservation and breeding efforts in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the Environment Minister also noted that a committee will be appointed in the future to review the use of domesticated elephants for cultural activities and to take appropriate policy decisions in that regard.
