
An 11-year-old schoolboy has died following a drowning incident at Galle Face last evening (10), where six children were swept away by strong sea currents while bathing along the beachfront.
According to police, the general public, police officers and Sri Lanka Navy personnel joined efforts to rescue five of the children. Two were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, while three others were taken to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for treatment.
Authorities confirmed that one of the rescued children, an 11-year-old resident of Maligawatte, succumbed after being admitted to the National Hospital.
Meanwhile, search operations are continuing for a 10-year-old boy from Maligawatte who remains missing after being swept away by currents. Police lifesaving units and Navy diving teams are conducting extensive search efforts in the area.
Further investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Fort Police.
